Below are the various educational programs that The Partnership for a Healthy Mississippi offers. Each program was developed and tailored to deliver its message to children in grades K through 12.

To learn more about each look below.

RAT

Reject All Tobacco (RAT) is for grades K-3. Terrance the RAT is the lovable mascot who helps teach these young students facts about the dangers of tobacco use through a variety of lessons that incorporate existing subject matter. All information is presented to youth in an easy-to-learn manner. Students also receive a family guide to take home and use to reinforce the classroom lessons. Terrance also travels the state with his “RAT Pack" to reinforces the classroom lessons with a fun-filled song and dance performance. Terrance urges elementary students to Reject All Tobacco! Terrance tells his friends, “You better tell somebody!” This program gives youth in grades K-3 the facts to do exactly that.

SWAT

Students Working Against Tobacco (SWAT) is for grades 4-6. This activity-based program educates youth about the dangers of tobacco use and strengthens their decision-making skills. Teachers receive free training and free classroom materials that incorporate tobacco education lessons into existing subject matter. A family guide is sent home with students, providing an outlet for sharing information with family members and others in the household.

Students can also become members of SWAT Teams and conduct additional awareness and education activities that help reinforce the classroom lessons. Team members earn prizes for their activities.

And, when you need a resource for reaching a large number of students in one setting, SWAT on the Road is available. This interactive performance involves games and activities that teach the facts about the harmful effects of tobacco, while reinforcing good decision-making skills.

FREE

FREE is a program designed for seventh and eighth graders. It is one of four age-appropriate tobacco prevention programs developed and implemented by The Partnership for a Healthy Mississippi. The FREE program provides tobacco prevention activities that focus on life resiliency skills and empower members to make healthy lifestyle choices.

Adult sponsors meet with FREE Teams on a monthly basis. Using the activities in the FREE manual, they convey the importance of making positive decisions, such as the decision to be tobacco, alcohol and drug free. Other topics covered during the monthly meetings include communication skills, self-esteem, conflict resolution, goal setting, advocacy and decision-making skills.

Frontline

Frontline is a youth advocacy movement for high school students. Through health and science lessons for 9th-12th graders, teens learn about the devastating effects that tobacco use has on their bodies. Frontline Teams work in their communities to help change the culture of tobacco use in our state. Teams learn valuable communication skills and participate in activities that prepare them for the transition into adulthood. Teens in 9th-12th grades can participate in Frontline Teams. Prizes are sent to all teens who participate in monthly Frontline activities and report them to The Partnership.

On a local level, Frontline Teams have worked for smoke-free restaurants and businesses. On a statewide level, Frontline members successfully advocated for a ban of tobacco use on all public school property by students and adults alike. The bill was passed and signed into law, and was the first youth-led movement of its kind anywhere in the nation.
